Welcome back from the holidays!
We hope you had a restful two weeks and that you’re feeling
re-energized and enthused about the New Year ahead!

Ministry K-12 Report Card Policy Announcement
Just before the Christmas holidays the Ministry of Education announced changes to policy for assessing, evaluating and reporting student learning. The changes will be implemented for September 2010. Learning skills and work habits will be given more emphasis on report cards. At the elementary level, there will be two report cards, one in January/ February and a second report card in June. There will be a fall progress report. Letter grades will be used on report cards for Grades 1 to 6. Percentage marks will be used on report cards from Grades 7 to 12. Inservices to train teachers in implementing these changes should be conducted by the Board. The new report cards will be in electronic format. OECTA welcomes these changes as good news for our members.

OECTA Benefit Committee
This morning our OECTA Benefit Committee met with Board representatives. The OECTA team presented the Board with a list of proposed enhancements for September 2010. Two
further dates were set for the continuation of benefit negotiations: January 28th and 29th. We will keep you apprised as talks progress.

The OECTA Annual General Meeting is being held at the Westin Harbour Front Castle in Toronto on Saturday, March 13th, through to Monday, March 15th (the first weekend of the
March break.) Please submit your name to the unit office if you are interested in attending. It’s a great experience, with lots of chances to network with colleagues and to participate in giving
direction to your Association. Both permanent and Occasional Teachers are welcome!

Provincial OECTA Volleyball Tournament
The Provincial OECTA Volleyball tournament will again be held in Ottawa this year, on May 1st, 2010. It is a co-ed tournament (3 men and 3 women on court). The cost is $500 to register before January 29th, and $525 after this date. (Fees cover gym rental, referee costs, hall rental, and 6 banquet tickets.) A subsidy may be available from the Unit to send a team. Anyone interested in fielding a team should contact the Unit office.

Staff Rep In-service
The winter Staff Rep In-service will be held on the afternoon of Friday, January 22nd at the North Grenville Community Complex. Lunch will be served at 12:30. Topics on the agenda include the implementation of full-day Kindergarten, and changes to the Safe Schools Act, along with local updates and a staff rep forum.

OECTA Young Authors Awards/Prix Jeunes Écrivains
A reminder that the Young Authors Awards is fast approaching. Submissions must be given to your school’s OECTA staff representative by March 1st for judging at the school level. Each school can submit one entry per category to the Unit Level for judging. All entries must be at the unit office by March 8th. Shortly after the March Break, judging will take place at the unit office for all school submissions. The winning entries in each category will be forwarded to OECTA provincial for final judging. Provincial winners will be announced at the June 2010 Council of Presidents in Toronto.
