February 4th, Professional Activity Day

Friday, February 4th is a professional activity day. For elementary teachers the day is designated as a report card day. At the secondary level it is a turn-around day.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

There has been some confusion over parent-teacher interviews due to the change from three to two elementary report cards. In previous years, in the fall following the first report card, schools would generally hold one evening of mandatory parent-teacher interviews, followed by further interviews scheduled on the early dismissal day. “Mandatory” meant that teachers were to attempt to meet with all of their students’ parents. The School Board decided that “mandatory” interviews would be held in February this year, following the first report card; the fall interviews would be by request only. That is, either the teacher or the parent might request an interview, but teachers needn’t attempt to meet with all parents. In the confusion of these changes, some schools went ahead and held “mandatory” interviews in the fall. To rectify this, the School Board has agreed that these schools would not have a mandatory interview night in February, but that appointments would be made by request only (of the teacher or of the parent.) Box 220, Kemptville, Ontario K0G 1J0 Phone: 1-888-250-3799 1-613-258-0841 Fax: 1-613-258-0842 Website: www.easternoecta.ca There has been further agreement between the Board and OECTA that the changes in reporting would not result in an increase in workload for teachers. Therefore expectations for attendance at parent-teacher interview nights would be respected according to the past practice of each school, with no net increase. Some schools have always held two evenings of parent-teacher interviews- one in the fall and one in the winter. Other schools only held one evening of parent-teacher interviews in the fall; in the winter term appointments were made at a mutually convenient time. Please contact the Unit office if teachers at your school are being asked to attend more parent-teacher interviews after hours than has been the past practice at your school.

Annual General Meeting

The OECTA A.G.M. is taking place in Toronto on March 12 – 14th. Our complement of delegates from Eastern is almost complete, though we do have space available for a second alternate delegate. If you would be interested in attending AGM as an alternate, please contact the Unit office.

Collective Bargaining Committee

Our Unit is beginning preparations for the negotiation of a new collective agreement. The current collective agreement expires on August 31, 2012. We are now calling for members who are interested in serving on the Collective Bargaining Committee. This committee is responsible for surveying members’ needs and putting together an initial proposal. Please contact the Unit Office by February 14th if you would like to be a part of this committee. It is expected that meetings will be held approximately once per month, with release time, during the school day.

Family Day- February 21

The OECTA planner has a mistake. It identifies February 14th as Family
