Win an iPad Contest Deadline May 31st

Our unit Political Action “Win an iPad” contest deadline is fast approaching: May 31st. The odds of winning are pretty good, so take a moment on the long weekend and fill out and send in your entry. The draw for the iPad will be held on June 1st.

Unit Elections- Wednesday, June 1st

Unit elections will be conducted by Staff Reps in schools on Wednesday, June 1st. There are two contested positions: Secondary CEO, and Councillor for Lanark, Leeds, Grenville. For the first position, Secondary CEO, only permanent secondary teachers will be eligible to vote. For the second position, LLG Councilor, both the permanent and occasional teachers in all LLG schools will be eligible to vote. Voting will take place during morning and afternoon recesses, and during lunch.

LTD Flex Plan Review

Every three years teachers are given the opportunity to change their selected LTD plan. Option 1 is less expensive ($54.58 per month), but has no provision for yearly Cost of Living Allowance increases (COLA) which apply if a teacher is on LTD for over two years. Option 2, while more expensive ($61.25 per month), does provide for a COLA of the lesser of the Consumer Price Index or 2% annually after Box 220, Kemptville, Ontario K0G 1J0 Phone: 1-888-250-3799 1-613-258-0841 Fax: 1-613-258-0842 Website: www.easternoecta.ca 2 years of continuous total disability. If you are unsure as to which option you currently have selected, you can find this information on your pay stub.

OECTA Staff Reps will be conducting OECTA meetings in schools prior to June 17th, to give teachers the opportunity to change their selection if so desired. The selection forms will be sent directly to those teachers who are on the Unit email system; additionally, every Staff Rep will be receiving selection forms and information regarding the selection process.

Enrolment in the LTD plan for teachers is mandatory in our Unit. Teachers assume 100% of the premium costs so that the benefit, when paid, is tax-free.

Collective Bargaining Survey

At the same OECTA meeting that Staff Reps will be conducting for the LTD Flex Plan review, Staff Reps will be asking teachers to complete a collective bargaining survey. Your Collective Bargaining Committee is hoping for a good level of participation in this survey. The results of the survey will help to inform the formation of the teachers’ initial proposal in the next round of collective bargaining which is fast approaching. Our current Collective Agreement expires as of August 31st, 2012.

Educating For the Common Good Conference

OECTA’s Biennial Educating for the Common Good Conference entitled “The Soul of Teaching: Changing the Human Condition”, takes place July 6-8, 2011 at the Hilton Toronto Airport Hotel and Suites, Mississauga, Ontario. The conference will open with a play reading of “Tough Case” that is currently touring all high schools in Nova Scotia. The keynote speakers are Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish; Michel Chikwanine and Ilana Landsberg- Lewis.

The conference is open to all OECTA members. Each bargaining unit is allocated one provincially sponsored delegate. If you would be interested in attending this conference, please contact the Unit office prior to May 27th.

May 27th Professional Activity Day

For elementary teachers, the May 27th P.A. day is designated as a teacher-directed for assessment and completion of report cards. Secondary teachers will be gathering in several central locations for professional development.

Retirement Dinners

Western Region retirement dinner is being held on Wednesday, June 15th, at the Smiths Falls Curling Club. The Eastern Region retirement dinner will follow, on Wednesday, June 22nd, at the Best Western Travelodge. Please come out to help celebrate this momentous occasion for our retiring colleagues.

FACES Project

Kindergarten teachers in Cornwall and possibly in other locales are being asked to participate in the “Faces Project” which is a partnership project with other community agencies. Its goal is to connect with parents whose children are entering kindergarten and to help them with such things as literacy skills and school preparedness. Teachers are being asked to volunteer to plan and conduct two evening sessions for this project. Participation in this initiative is purely voluntary.

Good Samaritan Trust Fund (GSTF) Golf Tournament

Kick into summer with a good deed and some fun: participate in the Board’s Good Samaritan Trust Fund Golf Tournament and help raise funds for students and families in our communities who are in dire need. This year’s tournament is being held on Tuesday, July 5th, at the Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club. Why not organize a team from your school? Tickets are $100 per person, which includes green fee, golf cart, dinner and your charitable contribution. For further information, check your staff bulletin board.
