E a s t e r n   U p d a t e - Friday, June 23, 2006

Congratulations The Eastern and Western Region Retirement and Awards’ Dinners were held during the last week. At the dinners, colleagues, family and friends honoured the twenty-one retirees – valued teachers, principals, a custodian and an Educational assistant - who have given so much to Catholic Education. The thirty-four 15 year pin recipients and eleven 25 year watch recipients were acknowledged for their contribution to education.

Rose Marie Guttentag received the 2005-06 President’s Award, which is presented annually, for her over 30 years of dedicated service to OECTA and to the teachers in our Unit. She has been the “eyes and ears” of OECTA in her schools for over the years. In her role as staff representative, and during her term as Recording Secretary of the SD&G Unit, she has always gone the “extra mile” in advocating for and assisting members.
A huge thank you must go to the Retirement Dinner committee members from the Board and OECTA – East and West – who made the two dinners memorable for our retirees.

Joan Kamps Memorial Bursary (OECTA)
Seven teachers from Eastern Unit have received bursary money from OECTA Provincial. The Joan Kamps Memorial bursaries are to assist members who wish to pursue post-graduate studies or professional development activities. We wish these teachers well in their studies, along with all others who are pursuing further education during the summer.

Contract Update
Teaching assignments for the next school year should have been received by teachers. Schools are working on schedules which will see 300 minutes of instructional time in all elementary schools, 180 minutes of preparation and planning time per week for each elementary teacher (pro-rated for part time), and has endeavoured to bring the supervision time in the aggregate to 100 minutes per week. There will be only one PPD day in 2006-07 since preparation time has increased to 180 minutes.

Secondary working conditions remain the same for the 2006-07 school year in the collective agreement.
Vacancies will continue to be posted in schools, Board offices and on the Board website for 5 working days during July. In August, vacancies will be posted for 5 working days on the Board’s website only. The Unit Office receives copies of all postings. Those who requested transfers, and did not receive one, will be contacted in the summer should a requested position come open for which you are qualified.
