Welcome Back,

Staff Reps – Our Association Life Line

The school staff rep fulfills an important function for the members of our unit. This person represents OECTA at the school level, providing information to teachers and informing the Unit Office of any emerging issues or concerns. As in previous years, we will have a one-day staff rep in-service in October and a half-day workshop later in the school year. This role is a rewarding one, as you are able not only to assist your fellow teachers, but you have the opportunity to meet other colleagues from across our Unit.

We ask that all schools inform us of the individual who will be serving as staff rep for the coming year. Please include name, school name, phone # and e-mail address. Any schools with over 30 teachers should have two staff reps.

Election Called

Yesterday, the first day of school, Premier Ernie Eves dropped the writ for the provincial election which will take place on October 2, 2003. As in the months preceding this election call, he has put teachers front and center in the election debate. To prepare for the election, we have been working with the other local teacher affiliates to ensure that all teachers in Eastern Ontario be informed of the issues critical to education and to the election in general. Over the coming weeks we will continue to provide you with information and issues pertaining to the upcoming election.

OTIP Bursary

Jarrod Whelan of Prescott, Ontario is 1 of 12 Ontario students chosen to receive a $1,000 academic bursary, awarded annually by OTIP (Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan). Jarrod’s mother, Alanna Whelan teaches at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Prescott and his father, Tom Whelan is Principal at St. Mary Catholic HS in Brockville.

Jarrod is a recent graduate of St. Mary Catholic High School in Brockville and will attend Fanshawe College this fall to study Police Foundations.

OECTA Award Winners

We congratulate the graduates of St. Michael, St. Joseph, St. Francis Xavier and St. Mary Catholic Secondary Schools who were presented with the OECTA bursaries at their June 2003 graduation ceremonies. We wish them success in all their future endeavors.

Remember, we are here in the Unit Office to assist and serve you.
