Alternate Day Schedule

Last year, the Unit was informed that a number of schools adopted an alternate day or balanced day schedule. As your representatives we met with the Board a number of times over the course of the year and in the spring local and provincial OECTA representatives achieved an agreement similar to that of other units dealing with this issue.

Agreement of June 2007

That there should not be an alternate schedule with more than one block of instructional time greater than 100 minutes.

That there should be input from the staff regarding any change to the regular day schedule.

Implications for part time teachers and LTO

Part time teachers are covered under Article 13 , in that the schedule of a part time teacher is to be prorated, therefore can only be assigned the percentage of time out of the 300 minutes of the instructional day.

The agreement last June reached a similar agreement for LTO’s who are working part time in that they will only be required to work the prorated minutes – for example a .5 LTO will work only for half of the 300 minute instructional day in an alternate day or balanced day school. That assignment may not coincide with the lunch break if the morning schedule exceeds 150 minutes significantly. In all other schools, a half day for occasional teachers would continue to be defined as before or after lunch.

Elementary Supervision

A reminder once again that the agreement stipulates that elementary teachers should receive a maximum of 100 minutes per week for supervision averaged over two weeks. Please inform us at the unit office if you are assigned more than this 100 minute maximum or if your school has adopted a schedule which extends the school day (for example with early or direct entry.)

Staff Reps

If you have not already done so, please contact the unit office to inform us who will serve as staff rep this year. The full day Staff Rep in-service will be held on Monday September 17, 2007 at the North Grenville Municpal Center located at 285 County Road 44. The in-service will begin at 9:30 am and both James Ryan, OECTA 1st Vice President, and Victoria Hunt, OECTA Provincial Staff will be presenting to the reps.
