Calling for Staff Representatives
Now is the time to select a staff representative for the 2006-07 school year. The general roles and responsibilities for representatives are summed up as the “eyes and ears of the Unit”. Communications from the Unit Office and Provincial Office are usually addressed to the rep, who then posts them or calls a meeting to pass on the information to the staff. They are advisors and advocates, the go-to person for questions about the Unit, contract issues, and meetings with administrators. When required, they direct the member to call the Unit Office or does so on their behalf. It is good to have a co-rep to share the responsibilities.
Staff rep meetings are held bi-monthly unless there are pressing issues which require a special meeting. Three Unit General Meetings are held each year – fall for audit and budget, winter for looking at AGM resolutions, in the spring (if needed) to approve changes in the constitution. The agendas also include local and provincial items. These meetings are for all teachers and serve as Staff Rep meetings for that month. These meetings provide an opportunity for reps to network with their colleagues from across the
Please forward your name, the school you represent, and an e-mail address where you can be contacted to the Unit Office.
If you have questions or concerns regarding preparation and planning time, on calls, supervision, combined credit courses, workload, salary, etc. contact the Unit Office. We would like to begin visiting schools and meeting with the staff as soon as you can find the time in your busy schedules. Please call to set up a date.

OCT Elections (September 5-October 24, 2006)
It is important that you vote for teacher representatives to serve on the OCT Governing Council. Shane Pisani, St. John CHS in Perth has put forward his name for a Southeast regional position. We thank Shane for his interest in serving, not only our members, but all teachers across the province, and we wish him well in the election. Go to www.oct.ca to read the biographies for Shane and the other candidates.
