Strike at the Canadian Museums of Civilization and the Canadian War Museum
Workers at the Canadian Museum of Civilization (Gatineau) and the Canadian War Museum (Ottawa) took to the picket lines on Monday, September 21 in an effort to obtain a fair contract that provides job security and salaries comparable to those paid to workers in other museums or galleries in the National Capital Region. They are members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC.) Where possible teachers should avoid field trips to the two institutions during the strike.
Elementary Prep Time Banking
On October 5th, a joint memo was issued by the Board and OECTA regarding an agreed upon protocol to be followed for the banking of missed prep time at the elementary level. Principals are to share this memo with teachers. Please read this memo and follow the protocol, using the attached tracking table. This should clarify any disputes as to whether or not missed prep time can be banked. If, however, questions do arise, call the Unit office for assistance.
On Thursday, September 17th, the OECTA Secondary Staffing Committee met to review class sizes and identify which secondary schools most needed additional staffing under the Provincial Discussion Table (PDT) agreement. Our Board was to increase secondary staffing by 1.8 teachers over that which would have regularly been funded by the GSN’s (Grants for Student Needs.) Our recommendations were presented to the Board that afternoon, and both parties were in agreement to hire the additional teachers at St. John CHS (1.0) and at Holy Trinity (2 X 0.5).

Itinerant Art Teacher Pilot
As reported at the end of the last school year, the Board and OECTA agreed to pilot the use of an itinerant Art teacher in the Cornwall area schools as a means of delivering the extra 10 minutes of preparation time per week for elementary teachers. This 10 minutes per week, it was agreed, would be aggregated to provide large chucks of extra preparation and planning time. The pilot is underway and we are receiving very positive feedback. Each elementary teacher is receiving an additional 375 minutes of preparation time while the itinerant art teacher is present at their school. The following schedule approximately maps out the itinerant art teacher’s stint at each of the Cornwall area schools: Iona Academy, Sept. 14th - Oct. 8th; St. Peter, Oct. 13th – Nov. 3rd; St. George, Nov. 5th – Nov. 12th; St. Columban, Nov. 16th – Dec. 15th; Immaculate Conception, Jan. 4th – Jan. 26th; Bishop Macdonell, Jan. 27th –Feb. 25th; St. Anne, Feb. 26th – Apr. 9th; Sacred
Heart, Apr. 12th – May 13th; St. Andrew, May 14th – June 8th; Our Lady of Good Counsel, June 9th – June 23rd.
