Municipal and School Board Elections

Just a reminder that Municipal and School Board elections are taking place on Monday, October 25th. Please exercise your right to vote. Municipal election voter turnout is generally so low that every vote cast really makes a big difference. These elections are highly important to us and to our communities. As teachers we are already well involved in our communities. Be sure to extend this involvement to electing the best possible candidates charged with overseeing and running our local institutions

Benefit Claims

A number of teachers have recently asked questions regarding when the year commences for benefit claims. This is a good question, considering that we have had benefit enhancements that took effect September 1, 2010.

Generally, claims are calculated by the calendar year, from January 1 to December 31st. This means that, for example, if you max out your physiotherapy coverage of $750 for the year in October, you will become eligible for a new allotment of $750 come January 1st.

Benefits that are structured over several years are an exception to this rule. For example, with vision, you become eligible for your next $300 for glasses two years from the time of your last claim.

How then, are our new enhancements being fish-tailed with our old benefit coverage this year? Human Resources provides the following explanation:

With regard to the enhanced paramedical benefits, whatever amount was paid prior to September 1, 2010 will count toward the Annual Maximum benefits now in place as at September 1, 2010.

For example, if a plan member was reimbursed 3 Chiropractic visits at $15.00 each, we will apply $45.00 toward the September 1, 2010 annual maximum of $500.00. Therefore, until January 1, 2011, the plan member would only be entitled to $455.00 until December 31, 2010. Then at January 1, 2011, a new annual maximum of $500.00 starts.

Please call the Unit office if you have any questions regarding your benefit plan.
