Progress Report Expectations Clarified

Yesterday the School Board issued a memorandum to all principals, vice-principals and teachers of Grades 1-8 regarding Elementary Progress Report Cards. This memorandum was issued by Superintendent Jane McMillan and is to be copied by principals to all elementary teachers who are completing progress reports. The memorandum clarifies exactly what is required of teachers with respect to the comments in the learning strategies and subject/strand boxes on the progress report.

I specifically want to draw teachers’ attention to the following excerpts:

  1. “We value teachers’ professional judgment to determine the length and detail of the comment(s) required to convey “personalized, precise, clear and meaningful feedback to parents,” on the subjects(s)/strand(s). For the Progress Report Card, it is not necessary to comment on all the subject(s)/strand(s), nor is it necessary for teachers to fill in all of the available space in the text box.”

    This is in-line with the Growing Success policy and it also reflects the advice and information issued by OECTA with respect to completing progress reports. It is up to the teacher to decide how much to write and which learning skills and subjects/ strands require comments.

  2. “Based on the School Improvement Plans that have been submitted for this year, we anticipate that teachers may take advantage of this opportunity to communicate the progress our students are making in terms of achieving our goal of increased literacy and numeracy achievement for all learners.”

    Although samples of Literacy and Numeracy were provided on the Board GO site, here it has been clarified that whether or not to include literacy and numeracy comments is at the teacher’s professional discretion. There is no requirement for literacy or numeracy comments in the Ministry’s Growing Success policy.     The School Board has been preparing for the November 12 Progress Report P.A. day by having teachers participate in “load tests”, so that on Friday, when a great number of teachers are working on the server completing progress reports, all the glitches have been ironed out.

    Should you encounter any difficulties at any time when using the server to do either progress reports, or I.E.P.’s, or Kindergarten report cards, please use the following tracking sheet to document the problems.
