Occasional Teachers Reach Tentative Local Settlement

Yesterday, on December 4th, the Eastern Unit Occasional Teachers’ Negotiating team and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern reached a tentative settlement for the renewal of a local collective agreement for the period of September 1, 2012 through to August 31, 2014. Several significant changes were agreed to, and many minor and housekeeping changes were also made. An impasse was reached regarding how the language of the Memorandum of Understanding (M.O.U.) negotiated provincially would be incorporated into the collective agreement. OECTA will be requesting that the Ministry append the M.O.U. to the collective agreement when it is sent for approval, as the M.O.U. supersedes provisions in the collective agreement.

Occasional teachers are being called to a meeting to ratify the locally negotiated changes to the collective agreement. The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12th, in Kemptville, at the Purvis Hall building at the University of Guelph, Kemptville Campus, 830 Prescott St. A map is attached. A light dinner will be provided.

It is very important that occasional teachers attend the meeting and vote. Information about the agreement will be shared at the meeting. For those unable to attend, information will only be shared after both the teachers and the school board have had the opportunity to ratify, which for the school board will be December 18th. This meeting is open only to occasional teachers with the C.D.S.B.E.O.

LTD

A few calls have been coming in to the Unit office regarding the mailing teachers received about the Long-Term Disability Plan enrolment opportunity. Please note: If you are currently enrolled in the LTD plan (and most every teacher is- see the deductions on your paystubs), then NO ACTION IS REQUIRED. This applies only to permanent teachers. Occasional teachers and continuing education teachers are not eligible for enrolment.

Short Term Disability Plan

Some misinformation is being circulated about the Short Term Disability Plan. It is incorrect to say that if a teacher does not qualify for 90% through the adjudication process, then they will not receive any salary. If a teacher does not qualify for 90%, then their salary for the period of absence will be 66.67%.

Permanent Teacher Bargaining Unit

Permanent teacher collective bargaining contiues on Thursday, December 6th and Friday, December 14th. We will send out further information about the progress of negotiations as they develop. A tentative meeting date for ratification of a new collective agreement has been scheduled for Monday, December 17th. Please keep this date available in your calendars.
